Rock Rhythms

"Rock Rhythms"
17.75 x 24 Charcoal painting

The rock walls along Barracks Ranch road near Mt. Carmel, Utah, have a special kind of beauty to them. Deeply etched lines on the face of the rock silently bear witness to hidden truths within and countless stories without.

Their textural patterns seem to have a rhythm; a visual music.

The many jagged scars and deep stripes etched in the rock walls of Barracks Canyon testify of their history; the enduring ancient Story.

(This is the sister piece, so to speak, to Rock Rhythms)

High Above

One of the many rewards of painting on location is the time spent surrounded by such beauty. Your senses are heightened as you observe the movement of light and the nuances of color in the shadows of these cliffs. Below, sunlight illuminates the brilliant colors of converging rivers and high above the rushing waters your eye catches a bit of movement. Spotting wildlife while out painting is the ultimate reward, maybe even more of a reward than getting a good painting!
Location: Lee's Ferry, AZ at the Paria Riffle with a great blue heron watching over all.

"High Above" is featured in the AWA exhibit at the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY from January 19 -  April 22, 2018.

Monument Valley

The junipers of Monument Valley are not pretty trees. They are twisted, ragged and gnarly, scorched by sun and wind, and penetrated by the dusty red sands. What they do have is their own individual character and a kind of elegance that lends itself well to being sketched.
The view of this particular tree, with raven perched at the utmost highest branch, lifts your eyes upward, from the base of the tree to the top.

I was so excited to include 2 drawings in the exhibit, one being a charcoal painting/drawing (Rock Rhythms) and this one.

Early morn right before dawn, looking west/southwest at Vermilion Cliffs in northern Arizona. Clouds have moved on but not before leaving behind a precious gift.

**This painting, along with Monument Valley, Vermilion Morning, and Vermilion Twilight will be included in the 6th Annual Women Artists Show at Grapevine Gallery in Oklahoma City, OK February 15 - 17, 2018.
